Veterans recognized at Sigourney Schools

Students at Sigourney Elementary and Jr./Sr. High all paid tribute to those brave Americans who have chosen to put on the uniform and serve in the armed forces. At Sigourney Elementary School, students recognized veterans through reader’s theater programs, as well as the presentation of quilts of valor; all helped to recognize those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. At Sigourney High School, a video talking about the history of Veterans Day and the armed forces was played to a packed gymnasium of students and veterans. In addition, Col. Todd Jacobus, Iowa Army National Guard, ret., spoke to the large group of students.

“Veterans Day is truly a celebration - a celebration of those who served our nation in uniform. This day is set aside for the American people to acknowledge and give respects to those who set themselves apart from the other 325 million people by serving in the United States Armed Services,” Jacobus said, helping to explain the importance of the holiday. “Each of these men are separating themselves from 325 million Americans. They endure training, they endured hardships and discomfort, in order to support and defend. We are here to recognize and acknowledge all of you today,” he added.

Jacobus shared a quote which states that in order for a nation to be willing to prosper, citizens must be willing to serve.

“Since 1636, our nation has had an armed force willing to do that very thing,” Jacobus said.
