Shaw makes it four in a row

MARSHALLTOWN – Cross country running is a learning experience, and North Mahaska senior Cheyenne Shaw takes hard-earned knowledge and uses it to her advantage. Settling for second at the South Iowa Cedar League meet last week was enough motivation. This past Thursday, Shaw ran to a third-place finish at the state qualifier in Marshalltown to notch her fourth trip to state.

“This race was harder than Regina, but not by much,” said Shaw, recovering at the finish line. “Mentally, I think that is the strongest I have ever run a race. I stayed strong the whole time. I’m interested to see my splits at each mile.”

Senior Sophie Jungling of Aplington-Parkersburg was first class of the girls’ field, finishing in 19 minutes, 26.4 seconds. Freshman Rylee Dunkin of Twin Cedars took second in 19:55.7, followed by Shaw in 20:26.8. Greenlee Smock, a freshman from Lynnville-Sully, was fourth in 20:33.5.

Smock edged Shaw at the line in the South Iowa Cedar League meet at North English last week. That loss was a motivator for Shaw entering the state qualifier.

“It hurt, but it is one step,” said Shaw. “It was great for her to come in and do that. It was nice to be beaten for once by someone who is close. I am glad it happened, because it made me get focused and keep working for districts.”
