Panthers beat Mustangs as season winds down

Packwood – Pekin managed to get one game in before the Fourth of July when they hosted Davis County on July 1. They were scheduled to play Danville and Fairfield on July 3, but both games were cancelled but the Panthers notched another win on the season by beating the Mustangs 7-5.

The Panthers got a big start from their offense, which was ultimately needed in the end. Pekin shut down Davis County the first couple innings, while their offense put up five straight runs to put the Mustangs in a hole. Following an end to the shutout bid in the third, Pekin got the run back by plating one in the bottom of the fourth, holding onto a five-run lead.

Davis County wouldn’t back down and clawed their way back with another two runs in the top of the sixth, cutting their deficit to three runs. Pekin responded with another run to close out the inning and held on for a tight win after the Mustangs scored twice more in the seventh inning.

Caleb Comstock led the offense with three hits and scored twice while Tanner Bainbridge had a pair of hits as well. Several other Panthers recorded one hit, including Kennan Winn with a home run. Quinn Ledger and Bainbridge did the most damage at the plate, combining for four runs driven in.
