NM girls throttle No. 1 Montezuma

NEW SHARON – Three questions were on the minds of fans and coaches Jan. 27 when top-ranked Montezuma came to the North Mahaska gym to play the No. 4 Warhawks. How many points would Montezuma’s Shateah Wetering score? Could a sophomore replace NM post player Emma Tyrrel? And could Montezuma control North Mahaska’s strong inside-outside game? The result: North Mahaska 58, Montezuma 46.

Weterering, a University of Iowa recruit, scored 24 points against NM sophomore Layla Hargis. The third question was answered in that only one of the players for Montezuma scored more than three points – Maddy McKeag hit for 10. Meanwhile, North Mahaska saw five players score more than six points apeice.

North Mahaska and Montezuma went toe-to-toe in the first quarter with the home team leading 16-14. North Mahaska, behind the shooting of senior Jade Hay took a 29-20 halftime advantage. The second quarter defense held Monte to six points then replicated the effort in the third taking a commanding 40-26 lead into the final frame. In the last half of the period Montezuma had just three team fouls and had to commit infractions to get the Warhawks to the free throw line.
