NM Girls Come Up Short Twice

EDDYVILLE – Two big innings in two games resulted in losses for the North Mahaska softball team. The big innings came despite overall good play. They fell in a nonconference tilt with Eddyville Blakesburg Fremont, 5-0 and Colfax-Mingo, 8-0.

Base on balls played a role in both games, but it was the ability of the Colfax-Mingo and EBF to get timely hits with runners on base.

Five walks in the first inning against EBF that saw the first three batters score to take the early 3-0 lead. Madi McKay came into the game replacing Emma Deucore. McKay struck out EBF’s Madysen Wade to end the inning. North Mahaska’ Karlee Chandler singled and reached second on a pass ball and later scored on Zoe Deucore’s single. The Warhawks managed just two baserunners the rest of the way.

“Just one big inning, but it’s the mistakes we make,” said NM coach Chris Sampson. “We work on these plays every day. We were getting hits, but right at them.”

The Rockets were able to place nine runners on base using eight hits. Peyton Deevers led the EBF charge with a pair of doubles and an RBI. They could have scored another, but North Mahaska catcher Paige Layman drilled a throw to Chloe Bossard who tagged out Wade to end the scoring threat.
