NM bags nearly half-ton of bags

NEW SHARON – Pizza can be a strong motivator for elementary students. Friends of Mahaska Conservation issued a challenge to North Mahaska Elementary students to collect plastic bags. The class that brought in the most bags would receive a pizza party courtesy of the Friends.

Elementary students brought in 973 pounds, just 27 pounds short of a half-ton. Tara Grier’s sixth grade class was the champion bringing in 121 pounds. The contest ended Oct. 18. Those bags amounted to 60,326. That means that many that will not end up in the county landfill.

“We are so appreciative of everyone that has participated in this project,” said Friends president Rodney Anderson. “As of today’s date, we have been involved in collecting 1,345 pounds and approximately 83,390 bags that have been recycled since we started this past April.”
