Magill sets new personal best on Senior Night

April 23 will be a special night for Spencer Magill and the Sigourney Savages when they hosted several teams for the Sigourney Relays. In addition to being recognized for Senior Night, with Sloane and their parents, Spencer also set a new personal best in the High Jump.

For a while, it was Magill and Talon Newton of Winfield Mt. Union dueling it out to see who would win the High Jump. Newton was almost knocked out early but was able to clear the bar on his third attempt to keep the competition alive. Magill cleared the first few heights with ease and finally beat out Newton at the 6’-1.00” mark, tying his personal best.

Magill wasn’t done and was committed in trying to set a new best, while drawing a crowd of viewers to cheer him on. He managed to do just that, getting over the bar at the 6’-4.00” but couldn’t make it any further. Nonetheless, he ended up setting a new best height and the crowd applauded his efforts.

“That was a big deal for Spencer to hit that height,” coach Jared Jensen said. “He had been stuck at 6’-1.00” for so long and now he’s got that confidence to finish out the season.”

Sigourney had several other high finishers including Tristan Bell running a time of 55.84 seconds in the 400m dash to place second and Payton Schauf winning the Discus at 150’-5.00”. Schauf also won the Shot Put with a throw of 44’-5.00”. Mason Moore had another good showing in the 1600m run with 5:02.42 and 3200m run at 10:48.94, placing third in both events.

Sigourney was at PCM on April 25 and will run at the SICL Meet at North Mahaska on May 6.
