Donated deer hides benefit disabled veterans

OSKALOOSA – Deer hunters. Are you looking for a way to dispose of your deer hides after this year’s hunt without tossing in a ditch somewhere? Oskaloosa Elks Lodge 340 and many others around Iowa have an answer.

Hunters donated more than 4,300 deer hides to Elks Lodges across Iowa last year, which was an increase of over 1,000 hides from 2017. The deer hides are used by the Veterans Leather Program to make professionally-crafted leather gloves for veterans in wheelchairs. Hides are also turned into leather used during therapy programs for recovering veterans.

Mark VanderWilt of Oskaloosa is one of the collector of the hides in the area for the Oskaloosa Lodge. He handles the hides for the local Elks Lodge. Hides may be deposited in a box at 701 D Avenue West in Oskaloosa.
