Dean of students making a difference at NM

NEW SHARON – Tim Veiseth smiles as he walks the halls of North Mahaska Elementary School. He greets every student he encounters and many times engages in brief conversation. He does the same when he walks into the junior-senior high wing. Why, because Veiseth sees it as part of his job as the new dean of students at the school.

North Mahaska sought out a dean of students to assist students and teachers with students who needing some extra attention in order to make it through the day.

“Each student has a story so it’s about relationships,” Veiseth told board members Oct. 21 and again in an interview this past week. “It’s a family here at North Mahaska and I greet the kids any chance I get.”

His role as dean of students is in stark contrast to his previous role as a principal at Oskaloosa Elementary. While not new to the administrative side, Veiseth is also an accomplished classroom teacher having taught fifth grade in Waterloo before teaching at Oskaloosa Elementary and Middle School.
