Braves wallop Savages, 64-28

MONTEZUMA — Mitch Eslick’s Sigourney Savages have hit a bit of a rough patch right before Christmas, losing three straight after winning their first four games of 2019. The latest setback was this past Thursday at Montezuma, a 64-28 loss to the Braves.

The home team came out firing on all cylinders. Defensively, Montezuma harassed the Savages, not allowing them to even get a shot up in the first two minutes and 25 seconds of the first quarter. It wasn’t until Cade Molyneux connected on a runner off the glass with 4:11 remaining in the opening period that Sigourney would get on the scoreboard. That would be the only basket of the quarter for Sigourney, as they trailed 18-2 after one.

“I thought we rushed a little bit too much and didn’t trust ourselves that if we played our game we could score against them,” Coach Eslick said of his team’s offensive struggles. “Obviously they’re an excellent team and a lot of our struggles were because of what they did, but I felt like we hurt ourselves a lot too.”

The Braves were efficient offensively, getting to the basket repeatedly with a dribble-weave style offense. Molyneux did his best to claw the Savages back into the game, but every time he scored, Montezuma responded with a bucket of their own. The sophomore scored Sigourney’s first seven points, but his Savages trailed 29-7 with 4:44 left in the second quarter. Eslick was impressed by Molyneux’s effort in the loss.
