BC American Legion Post Has Busy Monday

BARNES CITY – Members of the Barnes City American Legion Post had a busy Monday dodging rainstorms to place roses on veteran’s graves and present Memorial Day programs. They normally cover six cemeteries on Monday presenting programs at each. However they were only able to perform at Mormon Point, Indianapolis, and the final stop, a 10 a.m. service at Barnes City Cemetery. Fifteen minutes after the conclusion, Mother Nature opened the skies.

Upon arrival Legion members scattered out across the cemetery to place roses. They passed in and out of the flag-adorned drive making their way to ensure each veteran was honored.

At the service an estimated crowd of three-dozen listened to the Post Chaplain Marvin Freeborn as he spoke about the day and the meaning. The service included a rifle salute and taps played by Haleigh Weghorst, a recent graduate of North Mahaska High School.

This year’s service was especially poignant with the recent burial of Seaman First class Wesley Jordan, who was killed on Dec. 7, 1941 during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Many of those in attendance Monday were present on Friday for Jordan’s burial.

“I have been playing taps for a long time,” said Weghorst. “I was here last week and hearing taps played by the military was really something.”
